Four Unaccompanied Minors from Greek Camp Relocated to Luxembourg

Luxembourg Airport; Luxembourg’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has announced the arrival in Luxembourg of four unaccompanied minors from the Moria camp in Greece.

In accordance with the commitments made by the Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Jean Asselborn, following the fire which destroyed the Moria camp on the Greek island of Lesbos at the beginning of September 2020, Luxembourg is participating in the relocation of refugees from Greece with the aim of alleviating the precarious situation in the country’s overcrowded refugee camps.

Following the arrival of two families of Afghan origin on 29 September and 30 November 2020, four unaccompanied minors from the Moria camp arrived in the Grand Duchy today, Thursday 7 January 2021. The children are Afghan and Burundian nationals.

With the arrival of these four young people, in addition to the twelve unaccompanied minors having already arrived on 15 April 2020, Luxembourg has fulfilled its commitments made in 2020 to Greece by relocating a total of 25 refugees, including sixteen unaccompanied minors.

Earlier today, representatives of the Directorate of Immigration of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the National Reception Office (Office national de l’accueil – ONA) welcomed the new arrivals at Luxembourg Airport.

It is expected that relocated applicants for international protection will go through the asylum procedure in Luxembourg as provided for by the law of 18 December 2015 on international protection and temporary protection.
